Developments in the IT industry will allow robots to continue to be incorporated in hospital healthcare, establishing a significantly larger presence over the coming years, according to Mike Wilson, director of the British Automation Robotics Association (BARA).
"Robots are used in various different applications currently. They're used for surgery and for delivering drugs around hospitals, as well as in robotic pharmacies," Mr Wilson said.
While more advanced automatons are "definitely a thing of the future", people's familiarity with machines in hospitals will mean the public is willing to accept them being more directly involved in the administration of healthcare, the expert said.
Mr Wilson also said that the challenge would be machines actually start doing the work independent of the surgeons.
The expert said we haven't reached that scenario yet but he highlighted that people wouldn't be too concerned if these tools are being used as an aid to the surgeon.
