Breaking up the power of BT would only result in an increase in broadband prices, according to Andrew Ferguson, editor of thinkbroadband.com.
"Some call for a further break up of BT, but this is likely to result in a large upheaval and probably drive the price of broadband in the UK up. The high UK take up is largely down to our low prices," he said.
The expert went on to say that the delay in BT's roll out of its next generation services would allow for other players in the IT industry to innovate as well.
He also said that no other nation has yet delivered fast broadband for everyone and that there are always some customers who miss out.
His comments emerged as figures released late last month by the Office for National Statistics Revealed that over nine million Britons were yet to use the internet, in other IT industry news.
