As a result of new regulation and a more eco-friendly conscience, people will start reusing and recycling their end-of-life enterprise information technology (IT) equipment as a norm, according to Andrew Boddington, marketing director at regeneration service provider Ethical IT.
"Legislation and the social forces involved in people caring about this make this an inevitability," he said.
"Most companies have a CSR [corporate social responsibility] policy and it is something they know they're audited on," Mr Boddington added.
While IT departments are often seen as a problem to CSR, disposing of old IT equipment in a responsible manner means "turning it into an asset to the company", he said.
The expert went on to say that Ethical IT encourages its clients to invest the money it passes back to them in "green" and "community-type" projects.
He explained that "instead of people just not caring about end-of-life IT, it can then actually become something of value".
