The spending review led by the coalition government needs to be considered when analysing the deployment of super-fast broadband in the UK, according to Andrew Ferguson, editor at broadband information and news website thinkbroadband.com.
"It is possible that the funding for super-fast broadband may not be forthcoming from shareholders, who view the UK as a poor investment in this respect," he said.
"The UK with its ultra-competitive broadband market means that only projects that can measure users in the millions really stand a chance of showing a decent return on investment," he added.
Last week the chancellor of the exchequer, George Osborne, said the BBC will contribute to the £530 million the government will spend over the next four years to deploy super-fast broadband to rural parts of our country.
In other IT industry news, plans for three market testing projects to bring super-fast broadband to rural areas were confirmed earlier in the year.
