IT industry news: Programmer uses Kinect to 'make' lightsaber

15:44 25th November 2010

A computer programmer has modified the new Microsoft Kinect sensor allowing it to turn any object into the iconic Star Wars lightsaber.

The young programmer, known only by his YouTube title of Yankeyan, uses a broom handle to represent the fabled sword, which is then tracked by the Kinect's motion sensors.

Those considering programming courses will be keen to learn that the inventive programmer is using open source image processing software and drivers along with the Kinect's motion-tracking software to generate an image of the lightsaber.

This is not the first instance of the Kinect being pushed beyond its intended purpose; several other users have programmed the device for advanced tracking projects, including using it to control a robot.

In an interview with Bloomberg earlier this month, Don Mattrick, president of Microsoft's interactive entertainment business, said that the company predicts the Xbox Kinect will sell five million units this quarter, beating the initial forecast of three million.

However, Microsoft has since warned of potential shortages of the unit in the run up to Christmas.
