Despite IT industry developments, the implementation of private cloud computing is still a process considered to be expensive and intricate, according to David Bradshaw, research manager for software and services in Europe at IDC.
Mr Bradshaw said on-premises enterprise cloud has traditionally been "very costly and complex to implement and get going".
Private cloud is "going to have to be very much simplified because it is facing direct competition from the [public] cloud," he said.
The expert went on to say that there needs to be a transformation in cloud computing in terms of the way software applications are built to bring complexity and costs down.
He said he expects these applications to be built in a more simple way.
In other IT industry news, research from IDC published earlier this year found that server revenue for the private cloud market will grow from $7.3 billion (£4.8 billion) in 2009 to $11.8 billion in 2014.
