Consumers are rapidly turning their backs on conventional home computers in favour of portable devices, with one expert claiming the "post-PC" era is already underway.
Speaking to gadget publication T3, Tom Dudderidge suggested the proliferation of smartphones and tablet devices is already replacing the traditional desktop computer set-up and could have a major impact on people in IT jobs.
Mr Dudderidge, who is chief executive of audio peripherals company Gear4, also indicated that further technological advancements mean TVs will soon inhabit the space once filled by PCs.
"We know that the PC is unlikely to be the primary computing device of the next generation of users coming through and this move has already started," he told the magazine.
This industry shift was demonstrated by the latest quarterly study from NPD DisplaySearch, which estimated that almost 73 million tablet computers were shipped in 2011. The company said the year-on-year growth rate in the tablet market for last year is expected to reach 256 per cent.
