IT industry news: Personal computers 'won't be replaced by tablets'

07:45 7th June 2011

New IT industry developments like Apple's iPad or Nokia's smartphone won't replace personal computers but will rather act as a supplement to laptop and desktop devices, according to Roddy McLean, marketing director at memory upgrade website Crucial.com.

"Tablets and smartphones won't replace our personal computers, but actually serve to complement them," he said.

"Most people with tablets and smartphones use their computer as the hub in their computer ecosystem - a place to store photos, videos, data, et cetera," he added.

The expert also said that computers users make use of them in different ways so there is a space in the market for additional devices to coexist.

His comments emerged as IHS iSuppli said late last month rising consumer interest in media tablets like Apple's iPad is beginning to take a toll on the global PC market.

Shipments of desktops and notebooks in the first quarter of 2011 declined in comparison to the same period in 2010, the research revealed.
