IT industry news: Parent's 'should monitor their kids' online activities'

07:27 21st July 2011

Parents should monitor what their kids are doing online, according to Richard Harris, director of education and training at 7Safe.

He said parents need to make sure that they take an interest in where their children spend their time on the internet. Parents, he said, need to become involved in that process.

But he recognised a lot of parents he has spoken to "want to do the best for their children but [what] they have from day one is the children tend to understand the technology more than their parents do".??"So it means that parents trying to impose strict controls, [aren't] always effective because children often know more about these things then their parents and bypass them," he added.

The expert went on to say education was key when monitor their children's online activity because many parents don't yet comprehend "the risks of their children browsing the internet in an uncensored or unsupervised fashion".

In other related news, children must be made aware of online safety by both their parents and internet companies and they must be given the necessary tools to report any worries they might have, according to a spokeswoman from the Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre.
