Global shipments of PCs continued to increase in the third quarter of 2010, despite pessimistic IT industry predictions.
Consignments rose by seven per cent against last month and by a little more than ten per cent compared to last year, according to the market research firm iSuppli Corp.
Worldwide PC shipments in the third quarter totalled 88.1 million units, compared to shipments of 82.6 million in the second quarter of 2010 and 79.9 million in the third quarter of 2009.
Growth was recorded for shipments of all types of PCs, including desktops, notebooks and entry-level servers, but desktop PCs showed the highest monthly increase in volumes rising by 11 per cent on the second quarter.
While negative forecasts had circulated, iSuppli's Matthew Wilkins said that "even with consumer confidence shaken by government austerity measures, individuals and businesses continued to purchase PCs in the third quarter, driving up global shipments smartly".
iSuppli expects global PC shipments will continue to grow in the fourth quarter of 2010 and emerging technology is also set to perform well with Samsung expecting sales of its tablet device to hit one million by the end of the year.
