IT industry news: Online work events 'to become more popular'

08:48 17th December 2010

The practice of holding business and social events online via social media has become established in many companies and will continue to become increasingly popular, according to Nathan MacDonald, managing partner of We Are Social.

"It's only natural that a work social event can be transferred to a social networking environment. It's quite complementary to what can be achieved online," Mr MacDonald said.

Social media allows "new ways to integrate friendship groups with colleagues", he said.??Alongside office parties, more serious events such as conferences are in the process of migrating online, Mr MacDonald added.

"There are regular examples of people using social media to field interview questions instead of having to call in, and with conferences people are willing to transfer the real-world conference into social media, by asking people on Twitter to field questions," he said. ?

His comments emerged as creative agency the blur group said it will be holding its 2010 Christmas party via Twitter, connecting its 8,000 employees worldwide via social media.??
