Consumers must make sure they are using a legitimate website to avoid being victims of a scam, according to Paul Allen, editor of Computeractive.
"You have to make sure that you're actually shopping at the website that you want to be shopping at. For example, there are some criminals who set up websites that look very similar to legitimate websites,” he said.
He went on to say people should be particularly weary of links in emails.”Sometimes criminals will send out emails for example at Christmas, saying that they have got the most wanted present at discount prices,” he said.
The easy way to get around finding genuine sites, he added, is to actually type in the name of the website into a browser.
“So instead of searching Google for Marks & Spencer, actually type marksandspencer.co.uk into the address bar,” he explained.
