A number of online shops are finding it hard to sell certain items on the internet, according to Don Davis, editor of Internet Retailer magazine.
Mr Davis said shoppers feel more at ease when buying items they don't need to feel or touch.
"A book is a book, and consumers are happy to buy it online. A diamond necklace is something else," he said.
Shopping online has been a relatively recent development in the IT industry. British people have saved £27,024 since the millennium by shopping online, according to a survey conducted for elephant.co.uk. The survey also revealed that the biggest savings where made on the weekly food shop.
"Retail web sites have got much better in recent years in providing lots of images, videos and other information that can make consumers more comfortable buying all sorts of products online," Mr Davis said.
But items that are considered to have a high value are still difficult to offer to consumers, he added.
