IT industry news: Older people 'are increasingly using broadband'

06:46 29th July 2011

The numbers of older people using broadband is rising, according to Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk, a site offering information on the best UK broadband deals.

"There is a huge number of pensioners who are now online and they are increasingly coming online," Mr Dawson said.
He said Facebook is one of the biggest growth areas for the older generation.

"People are now using it to keep in touch with grandchildren and children," he said.

The expert said that the spike in older people using the internet is a result of families getting more disparate and older people are looking to keep in touch with members of their family all over the planet.

"There are going to be some die-hards that never want the internet, but at the end of the day you can't afford to not use it," he said.??

In other IT industry news, the popularity of smartphones has increased the use of mobile broadband, according to Edd Dawson, editor of broadband.co.uk, the independent broadband advice website.
