"At work, around 90 per cent of all new jobs now require internet skills, with a significant proportion now advertised and applied for only over the internet," the expert said. 

She went on to say that with both government and commercial services "increasingly moving online", people are missing out on easy access to information.

Ms Stevens also said the web is allowing people to keep in touch, follow hobbies, help with homework, and even manage household finances.

In other IT industry news, fresh data released by the Office of National Statistics show there are still 9.2 million people in the UK who have never used the internet.

According to the ONS, 73 per cent households (19.2 million) had internet access, an rise of 0.9 million on the previous year and a increase of five million since 2006.
