IT industry news: 'No correlation between online ethics and being target of web criminals'

There is no rigid correlation between online ethics and falling foul of criminals on the web, according to senior security advisor for Trend Micro Rik Ferguson.

"The main thing that makes UK adults and adults in general more susceptible to cybercrime is lack of awareness about the nature of the threat and how you can have your information stolen," he said.

The expert said users must proceed with care in the online world. His comments emerged as a fresh report by Norton revealed adults in the UK are the most honest when it comes to passing on personal information online.

The study showed that 33 per cent admitted to giving out false details via the web, while only 18 per cent had used a fake ID online, making Brits the 'most ethical' internet users out of the 14 countries examined.

But the research also found that 59 per cent of those surveyed in the UK said they had experienced some form of cybercrime.
