The next generation of video game consoles is likely to allow users to access games via cloud-based technology, according to Martin Robinson, games editor at IGN UK.
"The big platform holders like Sony and Microsoft are certainly going to be watching it keenly, to see if its successful. Its success is going to be down to the games that are available on the service - it will live or die by that," said Mr Robinson.
The use of cloud computing on consoles would become more prominent as soon as issues such as lag have been reduced, he suggested.
He said that once those issues are resolved then the next generation of consoles has a future in the cloud-based space.
His comments emerged as on-demand videogame service OnLive announced it had shipped its first pre-ordered units in the US ahead of its January launch. The service allows users with broadband-enabled TVs, PCs and laptops to access a library of games using cloud computing.
