IT industry news: 'More people are browsing the internet on a mobile phone'

08:48 21st July 2011

About 28 per cent of all internet browsing takes place on a mobile device, according to Rob Thurner, mobile consultant and digital trainer, at the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM).

He explained some of the reasons behind this surge. In 2005, fixed rate data plans grew in popularity. In his view, this got rid of a huge restriction because many thought the prices were too high.

"In 2008, we saw a huge amount of iPhones launching and this had a fundamental effect. People realised for the first time that this wasn't just a phone in their pocket, it's a little computer," he added.

The expert went on to say that with faster processing power, bigger screens and touch screen, users can "do things on their mobile that ordinarily we would have to wait to do when we were back on the PC".

In other news, mobile devices like the Apple's iPhone or Google's Android will be increasingly exposed to more complex and common cyber attacks, according to Con Mallon, director of regional product marketing at online protection brand, Norton.
