Mobile broadband subscribers have surpassed wireline broadband subscribers with 558 million vs. 500 million last year, according to Market research firm Infonetics Research.
But the company highlighted fixed-line services will still be in demand, especially with China giving a boost to the worldwide wireline broadband base.
This was particularly evident as China pursues its massive fiber-based program "led by the Chinese government, which has set a 20Mbps benchmark for all broadband subscribers, where most today receive 2Mbps to 3Mbps at best," according to Stéphane Téral, Infonetics Research's principal analyst for mobile infrastructure.
In addition, Infonetics forecasts the number of mobile phone subscribers to grow to 6.4 billion in 2015 (the current global population is 6.9 billion), the company said in a press release.
In other news, the UK is "dragging its heels" when it comes to mobile broadband services, according to Chris Marling, editor of Broadband Genie.
