IT industry news: Modular data centres 'give flexibility to cloud infrastructures'

07:43 1st September 2010

The implementation of modular data centres gives flexibility and sustainability to cloud infrastructures like the new Merlin Tier 3 facility, according to Paul Anderson, programme director for infrastructure outsourcing at Capgemini.

"The modules are 100 per cent reusable. The only part within the module that cannot be recycled is the adiabatic cooling panels, at component level," he said.

The expert also said that such modules have about ten times less embedded carbon than in a module to be fitted in a new building. Mr Anderson went on to say that setting a modular data centre allows companies to get onto a sustainable path.

Capgemini said in a press release earlier this month that it will be launching the world's most energy efficient and sustainable data centre alongside a major UK customer.?

In other IT industry news, IT firm Wipro said recently the development of a new series of modular data centres, which could take only a week to install, without the need for downtime when up or downgrading.
