Progressive record labels have been taken advantage of the developments in the IT industry when it comes to digital technology for years, according to Nigel Sachdev, managing director of online music community Stereoboard.com.
"The big labels have been burying their head in the sand pretending that filesharing didn't exist," Mr Sachdev said, adding that forward-thinking labels have engaged with digital technology instead.
He went on to say that the music industry is "in the state it's in now due to years of negligence and poor decisions".
Separately, according to the BPI (formerly the British Phonographic Industry), record companies in the UK have been innovative in using digital systems to develop new revenue streams in response to difficult market conditions.
And according to a report conducted by Chetan Sharma Consulting and published earlier this year by GetJar, more money will be made from mobile applications than CDs by 2012.
