IT industry news: Mobile powered by oxygen breathing batteries 'a close reality'

07:29 30th December 2010

Mobile phones powered by oxygen breathing batteries will not become a feature of the consumer electronics market "during the next five years", according Ludwig Makhyan, founder of ConceptMobiles.com.

However, Mr Makhyan said they might emerge "in the future, but not during the next five years".

"This could be considered as a new advancement in the mobile phones market, and at some stage may become a built-in device rather than a separate exchangeable one," he said.

His comments emerged as IBM recently speculated that batteries will last up to ten times longer than those currently used, and that some will even be able to 'breathe' oxygen as a means of powering devices.

Some batteries will even be able to 'breathe' oxygen as a means of powering items, IBM said.

It suggested that in smaller devices it may be possible to eliminate batteries altogether, with static or kinetic electricity providing power.
