IT developments in mobile phones will allow mobile music to play a more important role in sales, according to Daniel Ashdown, a research analyst with Juniper Research, the leading wireless sector analyst firm.
"It's going to become an increasingly important part of the music industry," Mr Ashdown said.
"Consumption on the mobile" is likely to rise because "it's a ubiquitous device," he said.
"It's something that people are more likely to carry now than perhaps an mp3 player because it's an all-in-one device," he explained.
His comments emerged as Juniper Research said in a report the number of those using mobile users who also subscribe to music catalogues on a monthly basis, either via download or streaming, is set to reach 178 million by 2015.
The study said the increase in this demographic would be more than triple the number of users doing so in 2010.
