IT industry news: Mobile marketing 'still has scope for growth'

Companies in the UK can use this Christmas as a great opportunity to experiment with the growing sector of mobile marketing, according to Jason James, product manager for paid search ChannelAdvisor.

He said that "for online retailers mobile text ads are still a bit of an experiment".

"Click volume is fairly low and conversion rates are, not surprisingly, lower than on PC's and laptops – for no other reason than the difficulty of checking out on a mobile device," he explained.

However, he added: "With conversion metrics growing during the winter, this is the time to start or expand a mobile campaign."

His views emerged as a projection by Google Mobile Ads said 44 per cent of total searches for last-minute gifts and store locator terms will be from mobile devices this festive season.

?It also this year 15 per cent of all 'Black Friday' (the day Christmas shopping is traditionally deemed to begin in the US) searches will be from mobile devices. It based this assumption on historical growth rates.
