IT industry news: Mobile 'has become more prominent'

07:22 21st September 2011

The rapid rise of mobile technology represents a great opportunity for companies in the UK, according to Rob Thurner, a mobile consultant for the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing (IDM).

He has said one of the key shifts is the "tremendous advance" and "massive potential" of mobile as a channel.

"Brands really must make sure that their site renders well across a whole range of mobile devices, whether they're traditional handsets, smart phones or they're iPads or tablet devices. You can't ignore mobile anymore," he said.

He went on to say mobile allows companies to access new customers rather than just relying on existing ones and it also provides them an alternative channel to communicate.

"So it can unlock new revenues and new ways of interacting," he explained.

His comments emerged as a report by the Internet Advertising Bureau and John Lewis found that 30 per cent of consumers would switch to another retail brand if a company website provided a poor user experience.
