Advances made by the IT industry in mobile devices has allowed for them to work well with advertising and marketing, according to Gordon Borrell, CEO of local advertising research and consulting firm Borrell Associates.
Video, GPS (Global Positioning System), barcode readers, maps and cameras are some of the technological advances being used by marketing and advertising professionals, Mr Borrell said.
He expects more developments in the IT industry regarding mobile devices. "There will be spectacularly innovative things launched, most of which will lose a spectacular amount of money," Mr Borrell said.
His comments followed an ABI Research forecast which said businesses are primed to spend $1.8 billion (£1.2 billion) in 2015 as part of their overall mobile marketing budgets.
According to a recent report from Borrell Associates, local mobile advertising hit $285 million in 2009 and is expected to double this year to $586 million, then spike upward to $4.7 billion by 2014.
