The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) is expected to spend up to £1.2 billion on a new IT framework covering hardware, software, networks and other services.
According to ComputerWorldUK, the contracts will cover the next five years and smaller suppliers will be encouraged to bid for a share of the business.
News of the spending, which could create new opportunities for people seeking IT careers, comes shortly after the Libra IT system used by the MoJ's Courts Service was strongly criticised by the National Audit Office (NAO).
According to the NAO's report, the system is unable to perform basic accounting functions in its current state.
Meanwhile, experts have suggested that the size of the MoJ's planned framework indicates that the spending activity of larger government departments remains unrestricted by the centralised procurement strategy overseen by the Efficiency and Reform Group (ERG).
Chris Pennell, senior analyst at IT intelligence specialist Kable, told the Guardian: "The size and complexity of the potential tender runs counter to the ERG's objectives."
