IT industry news: Microsoft sees impressive sales of the Xbox 360 Kinect

17:28 30th November 2010

The Kinect sensor for Microsoft's Xbox 360 console has seen sales of 2.5 million units just a few weeks after its launch in early November.

Kinect allows users to play console games without using the traditional controllers; instead it uses a camera to track players' movements and relays them to the computer.

A rush of online sales generated on Black Friday, one of the busiest online retail days of the year, saw sales of the new product rocket last week and over the Thanksgiving weekend.

The strong sales figures were reached despite concerns from the company that it might run out of consoles in the run up to Christmas due to demand.

"We are thrilled about the consumer response to Kinect, and are working hard with our retail and manufacturing partners to expedite production and shipments of Kinect to restock shelves as fast as possible to keep up with demand," said Don Mattrick, president of the interactive entertainment business at Microsoft.
