IT industry news: Malware attacks 'rise as criminals eye money'

12:59 11th April 2011

The rise of malware attacks is driven by the need for profit, according to Con Mallon, director of regional product marketing at Symantec's consumer products brand Norton.

"This statistic is really driven by money," he said in reaction to a report by Symantec which revealed that the number of tracked web-based attacks per day rose by 93 per cent in 2010 compared to a year earlier.

The expert said these attacks seem to be "worthwhile" for criminals behind them because they can "make money from this and they can exploit things".

Separately, a recent HP report said cyber attacks are increasingly using web exploit toolkits as their weapon of choice due to ease of use and high success rate.

Mr Mallon said these toolkits are also "becoming more skilled" at "creating new variants or specific variants of malware".
