IT industry news: 'Look into ways to save on mobile data charges'

07:26 20th July 2011

People travelling outside the UK should do some research into ways that will save them money on mobile phone data charges, according to Jonathan Morris, editor of What Mobile.

Mr Morris said holidaymakers should "either get a local SIM card or if your smartphone has Wi-Fi look into getting it in your hotel".

"That can be quite expensive as well, but you may be able to sign up to a Wi-Fi service that allows you to use any hot spot for one roaming rate. That's a lot cheaper than using mobile data, and arguably a lot faster as well," he said.

But the expert said signing up for a long-term contract with a provider in exchange for short-term free or discounted data, as "it will hit you in the long run, and then you're tied in".

His comments emerged as The European Commission announced mobile users will be able to sign up to a separate mobile roaming contract from 2014, in order to save money when travelling.
