A great number of tools on the internet can help children with their IT training, according to Camilla Chafer, acting editor of TheSchoolRun.com.
"Parents can make sure that games and surfing online is as educational as it is fun," she said.
"Older children will find a wealth of information that will help them with homework and school topics and give them a better understanding of the world around them," said Ms Chafer.
She went on to say that there are plenty of great tools that kids can learn – for example Skype to keep in touch with far-flung family and friends – as opposed to getting sucked into social networking trends.
Nearly half of children who use the internet have access in their own bedroom, according to research by the EU Kids Online project based at the London School of Economics and Political Science.
According to the report, 48 per cent of children who use the internet have access in their own bedroom, and almost one in three children (31 per cent) have access via a mobile phone or other handheld device.
