IT industry news: Internet users 'should be aware of what they share online'

06:19 5th October 2010

Developments in the IT sector have allowed for greater online interaction but those using the internet tools must be careful how much information they share, according to Alex Deane, director of Big Brother Watch.

"We should all think more about what we share, and with whom, on the internet," Mr Deane said.

The expert's comments emerged after news that the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) has released new guidelines for prosecuting stalkers including those who use the internet to target victims.

"On balance this is good news, but there's a potential tension between the need to protect privacy online and the need to keep the internet free from government intrusion," he said.

He went on to say that accepting so-called 'friends' on Facebook can expose users to cyber-stalkers. He said in most cases this was a case of people using their common sense.

In other news, a new application, Facebook Places has launched in the UK. It allows users to 'check-in' and share their current location with others.
