Those using the internet should be more careful with the information they share on social networking sites, according Tony Neate, managing director of GetSafeOnline.org.

Taking precautions against malicious cyber attacks is very simple, Mr Neate said.

"These [cyber attacks] are specifically against government targets, but it is far more than this if you include people who are being subject to attacks in their daily life. People need to be aware of this" he said.

"If you take the necessary steps and precautions to safeguard both your PC and yourself, you are going to be very secure when you are online," he added.

The government networks are subject to around 1,000 cyber attacks, according to Iain Lobban director of the UK Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ), who was speaking at the International Institute for Strategic Studies.

There are over 20,000 malicious emails on government networks each month, 1,000 of which are deliberately targeting them, he said.
