World IPv6 Day, the first global-scale trial of the new internet protocol, IPv6 (internet protocol version 6), will generate a platform to communicate, experts have said.
The event witnessed the gathering of Hundreds of websites and internet service providers (ISPs) around the world earlier in June.
The event "draws attention to the need for operational expertise with IPv6 and provide a forum for discussing best transition practices," said Qing Li, chief scientist and senior technologist at Blue Coat Systems, the web security and WAN (wide area network) optimisation solutions provider.
"The bigger challenge is enabling IPv4 [internet protocol version 4] users to access content and applications from IPv6 sites and vice versa," Mr Li said.
However, "supporting both users in both environments will be crucial," Mr Li said, as both protocols will "coexist for many years".
The expert went on to say that all the information gathered by Blue Coat Systems through the trial will be "valuable" in helping its customers with the transition to IPv6.
