IT industry developments have allowed for companies to benefit from an increasing presence online, according to Phil Kingsland, site director of internet users' information resource knowthenet.org.uk.
He said many companies can benefit from the key role online increasingly plays when it comes to boosting their presence or giving support to their clients.
But he said "not every business will need to move every aspect of their business online".
The expert went on to say small businesses should address "the challenge of growing online revenue" by "examining each aspect of your business and taking a second look at where and how the internet may support revenue growth".
"Operational tweaks," such as awareness of web analytics or utilising an ecommerce platform to encourage up-selling, "can also enhance online revenue," he added.
His comments emerged as research published earlier this month by knowthenet.org.uk revealed British small businesses are now generating online revenues in excess of £36 billion a year.
