Internet-connected TVs will be less appealing for checking emails and social networking than PCs because of the communal nature of watching TV, according to Dan Cryan, head of broadband at Screen Digest.
Mr Cryan said connectivity is rapidly getting built into TV sets, and is quickly becoming commonplace.
However, he stressed that laptops, tablets and smartphones allow users "to retain a certain level of privacy" when surfing.
"You can sit there without interrupting the viewing experience of anyone else you're watching TV with, and indeed you're not necessarily broadcasting the messages you're sending to your friends, which of course you are going to do if it comes up through the living room TV set," Mr Cryan said.
He added that strong promotion of internet-based TV services such as
YouView from broadcasting companies "is likely to have much more of an impact than simply increasing broadband speed" in the drive towards widespread adoption.
The expert's comments followed a recent report by DisplaySearch which anticipated huge growth in the 'connected' TV market, forecasting there will be over 122 million internet-ready TVs in circulation by 2014.
