There is still a lack of women in the IT industry and the parental leave system currently in place in the UK is to blame, according to Maggie Berry, managing director of Women in Technology, an information portal for female technologists.
“IT remains a male-dominated industry, with men outnumbering women four to one,” she said.
She blamed legislation for this dynamic. "Although the legislation is changing, we still have the most unequal parental leave system in Europe and this 'motherhood penalty' is definitely one of the reasons why we don't see as many women in senior positions as we would like,” she said.
Her comments emerged at the centenary celebrations of International Women's Day.
She went on to say that there are positive signs the industry is moving in the right direction, for example she said the IT sector is gradually moving towards equal pay and opportunities for both men and women and there are many businesses keen to get more women on board.
