IT contracting has long been seen as a less secure profession as demand traditionally responds to economic cycles but it is gradually becoming "a much safer position" which could lure permanent workers into embracing it, according to Gerry McLaughlin, of ITContractor.com.
"Whereas previously IT contracting was highly cyclical and many contractors spent what they had built up in the good times during long spells out of work, it looks as if IT contracting has become a much safer profession," Mr McLaughin said.
The expert said businesses have realised the value of IT contractors during the downturn and that these workers will also be at the heart of the recovery, a shift in the way they have been used in the past.
He said this change in mentality could act as a trigger for staff IT workers to consider contracting.
Separately, the Bank of Scotland Report on Jobs highlighted the rise of temporary billings in the country to a 42-month high at the end of last year.
