The rise in hyper-local communities encourages tech-savviness among British users, according to Zara Rabinowicz, a technology expert.
The nation's collective love of gadgets and technology, in spite of relatively slow broadband speeds, "could in part be related to the idea that Britain today is a society which runs on multimedia", the expert said.
"As a nation we are used to engaging with people in a variety of mediums - video, radio, social media, TV," she added.
She said exploring this idea further has given way to the collaborative nature of many of the applications and websites that are currently on offer.
"The rise of hyper-local communities add incentive for people to get involved, as we are an inclusive community," she said.
The UK's tech-addiction spans the generations, with the average child now spending over two hours a day playing with mobile phones, laptops, mp3 players and games consoles, according to research published by uSwitch.com late last month.
