IT industry news: Hackers 'are looking to fool social network users'

The trust people have placed on social network sites like Facebook is being exploited by hackers to trick users and carry out cybercrimes, according to Dan Nadir, senior director of consumer products at internet security specialist Norton.

"What we've noticed more recently is that cybercriminals are building threats that are designed to trick social network users," he said.

Referring to them as "the bad guys", he went on to say cybercriminals have noticed internet users are much more likely to trust a link or attachment that a friend or family member has sent them. He said as a consequence they are exploiting that trust.

The expert also said that being fooled can cost people money, damage user's reputation or see them become "part of the problem".

"If your computer is hijacked by malware and used to send spam or host malware," he said.

His comments emerged as a report by Harris Interactive, published by ID Analytics, revealed more than 24 million Americans on social networking sites keep their online profiles 'mostly public', which means anyone can see their personal details.
