Government IT is "capable of using and exploiting the direction of travel of Google, Microsoft, Amazon, et cetera," according to Bill McCluggage, deputy government CIO (chief information officer).
G-cloud, the government's cloud computing strategy, is an "ecosystem" and "not purely government-only", he added.
The government official went on to say: "What it's not is a single data centre. It's certainly not all data centres in the government. It's not a single cloud pooling the work of all departments," he stressed.
G-cloud applications and infrastructure are not provided by single suppliers and it is not let to one technology stack supplier, he said.
"It is an interaction between other departments and private sector cloud activities," he went on to say.
Mr McCluggage was speaking at 360°IT, an IT infrastructure event which took place at Earls Court in London last month.
