IT industry news: Government ICT strategy 'has made good start'

The government's ICT strategy has made good early progress but room for improvement remains, according to a new report.

In its six-month review of the initiative, the National Audit Office (NAO) identified several areas where further changes should be made to ensure the strategy's success.

It warned that the public sector is facing an ICT skills gap that requires urgent attention, suggesting there will be opportunities for professionals with the correct computer training.

In addition, the NAO noted that the Cabinet Office is yet to develop a way of accurately measuring outcomes of the strategy.

Despite these concerns, head of the NAO Amyas Morse said the "initial signs are good".

He added: "New ways of working are as dependent on developing the skills of people in the public sector as they are on changes to technology and processes."

Launched in March, the strategy was devised to reduce duplication and waste by establishing a common ICT infrastructure for the public sector and opening up more opportunities for small and medium-sized businesses.
