IT industry news: Google 'will remain popular' among internet users'

19:03 22nd February 2011

Search engine Google will be popular among internet users for a long time unless it radically changes the way it operates, according to Jake Hird, senior research analyst at Econsultancy, a digital marketing and ecommerce professionals' community.

"Unless they made a really drastic, drastic user experience change that people didn't like, people are going to keep using it no matter what," he said.

Following the launch of Google Instant some analysts said that Search Engine Optimisation (SE) [COULD BECOME] irrelevant, but that hasn't proven to be the case and the effects of its launch are still not clear.

Mr Hird went on to say that the only noticeable effect on SEO has been on impressions (a single appearance of an
advertisement on a webpage). He said this change was particularly evident in paid search.

His comments emerged as Fast Company said earlier this month, citing Ben Gomes, the lead engineer on Google Instant, roughly 98 per cent of users are making use of Google's latest feature.
