Google's Android device is set to become as or more popular than Symbian but to a more niche market, according to Michael Morgan, senior analyst of a mobile devices at ABI Research, a market intelligence company.
"In terms of geographic reach and market share, I believe that Android will meet or exceed Symbian's all-time historic highs," Mr Morgan said.
"However, Android will present many more diverse 'faces' that are tailored to particular regions, price points, OEM [original equipment manufacturer] branding and such forth," he said.
The expert went on to say Android handsets are likely to be very different from each other but that Symbian devices tend to have a common theme among them.
Figures released by ABI Research late last month revealed around 69 million smartphones are running the Android operating system shipped last year.
ABI expects Android to gain 45 per cent of the market by 2016.
