Android-based phone sales witnessed growth during the second quarter of the year, reaching a 13.2 per cent share of the market, figures from GfK Retail and Technology show.
During this period, while contract market sales grew by less than one per cent, sales of Android phones increased by 350 per cent, the market research company said.
Commenting on the IT industry news, Megan Baldock, a GfK analyst, said: "The figures suggest an increasing number of consumers are now asking for Android handsets by name. Operating systems are no longer simply a by-product but a key selling point in their own right."
Separately, an expert has said the search engine giant should use its now obsolete Nexus One store to sell its handsets and other services. According to Jonathan Morris, editor of mobile phone magazine What Mobile, Google should turn the online shop into a virtual store for the sale of Android handsets and should also promote apps and provide news, advice and support.
