G-cloud, the British government's cloud computing strategy, will serve as a marketplace for apps, frameworks and patches, according to Bill McCluggage, the deputy government chief information officer.
Speaking at IT infrastructure event 360°IT in London last month, Mr McCluggage described the G-cloud as "an eBay-type activity where you go through it and acquire applications, infrastructure and updates".
"It is a separation of infrastructure from software providers and from technology stack providers," Mr McCluggage explained.
He said that the G-cloud will try to "disintermediate that market space," providing opportunities in the infrastructure, software and technology stack markets as the government looks into purchasing new solutions.
The government official also said that the G-cloud will be "inclusive of all product vendors" in terms of the software used to provide infrastructure.
G-cloud, he said, gives small and medium enterprises an open marketplace to bring their products into play.
