Companies in the UK should first invest in market research before branching out into e-commerce, according to Andrew Corbett, membership services director for UKITA, a private sector organisation responsible for the development of a credible and thriving IT industry.
He said market research is often ignored and companies need to think about possible mistakes in an effort to avoid then rather than ending up paying the cost for the experience. ?
"Track record, stability, take up, references. If you can have a look at their accounts, do - because there's a lot of pressure on web developers at the moment and that means they won't all be around in a year's time," he said.
"That comes down to portability, if they go bust what position are you in? Have you got all the login details to the servers? Have you got FTP (file transfer protocol) access? Have you got a couple of new developers that you're keeping warm in case you need to do something in a hurry?" he added.
In other IT industry news, websites looking to make an impression on customers must focus on making it user-friendly and appealing, according to George Foster, creative director at Gravitaslondon.com.
