Employees should be considered when securing data at UK companies, according to Dinah Greek, news editor for Computeractive.
She said it was challenging to secure data internally.
But went on to say companies could only give access to certain areas to certain people. "This helps with accountability and can help pinpoint exactly where a threat internally has come from," she said.
"Restricting downloading and copying of files, and use of USB and other memory devices needs to be carefully considered," she added.
Ms Greek said staff have a responsibility to make sure they don't put a company at risk.
They should be wary of downloading something they are not sure about, be careful about websites visited if internet surfing is allowed, she added.
In other IT industry news, the advent of 4G technology could significantly improve the coverage of broadband in the UK, according to Richard Patterson, director of Broadband Expert.
