IT industry news: Firms 'must get a grip on cloud computing'

08:08 5th October 2011

Companies in the UK must monitor the way staff uses cloud computing to make sure the service is being deployed in an efficient manner, according to James Peel, product manager at Opsview, an open source platform.

"Cloud's brilliant – it's very low friction getting cloud services up and running, which is fantastic in some ways," he said.

However, "it's all too easy to set up cloud services, [and] people tend to end up deploying far more than they originally intended," which can lead to higher costs.

His comments emerged as research on behalf of Opsview revealed 57 per cent of IT directors were concerned about cloud services costs spiralling out of control, with 54 per cent of companies unsure of how many cloud-based services employees were using.

The expert suggested the lack of knowledge within companies about their cloud services was indicative of a disconnect between IT departments and the wider organisation, and explained that businesses need to adopt a centralised approach.
