Businesses must be set free of any reputational hazards when reporting attacks to their IT systems, according to David Blackwell, director of cybersecurity at Detica, the information intelligence experts.
Mr Blackwell said companies need to be provided with the opportunity to be "open and frank without fear of reputational harm", saying this would be a "good thing" when it comes to providing help to the authorities in their efforts to develop cybercrime policy.
"[It is] important that industry and representatives thereof work with the government to help them understand the scale and nature of the problem," he said.
The expert also said the UK authorities are already working on the steps necessary to develop a policy that tackles cybercrime effectively.
In related IT industry news, according to the first joint government and industry report exploring the damages of cybercrime across Britain, the overall cost to the UK economy from such criminal activity is £27 billion per year.
